Burleigh Junior Archers

Burleigh Junior Archers has one of the largest junior memberships in the south east of England, with 20+ junior members ranging from 10 to 17 years old.

Juniors and adults shoot at the same times on Wednesday club evenings and on Sunday mornings or afternoons. Some junior only coaching sessions may also be programmed.

The club belongs to the AAS (Association for Archery in Schools). The AAS Badge scheme encourages juniors to improve their shooting up to Junior Master Bowman standard. Juniors progress through White, Blue and Red badges in their relevant age groups and then aim for the Gold Badge. In the twenty years since the scheme was introduced only 217 juniors throughout the country have achieved the Gold badge and nine of these have been Burleigh juniors. The AAS runs various junior tournaments throughout the year which juniors are encouraged to enter.

During the summer they enter the July Nationals postal competition. Juniors shoot National rounds of six dozen arrows and their best scores are entered, within their age groups, against juniors from all around the country.

Throughout the year juniors are encouraged to shoot at AAS and local tournaments as well as at the Burleigh Junior Open shoot, and when they have gained more confidence, to shoot at larger events such as the Junior National Outdoor and Indoor Championships.

During the winter months the juniors are able to shoot indoors on Sunday mornings and afternoons at a local school. This year some Saturday mornings have become available for indoor practice. In the autumn, they enter another postal competition, the November Challenge. This time the best three dozen arrows of their Portsmouth rounds, shot in November, are entered against other juniors from around the country.

During the winter Burleigh enter a team of juniors in two National monthly postal leagues.

One is the Frostbite postal league which is shot on the first Sunday of the month from November to March. The league consists of divisions of six teams of five juniors, and each month the juniors shoot against one of the other teams in their division. A round of three dozen arrows is shot at 30 metres on a 80 cm face. This takes place whatever the weather (wind, rain, fog and snow!). The best five junior scores on the day make up the team entry. The team which wins the most of their five matches wins their division.

The second is the indoor monthly postal league which is shot at Burleigh's indoor venue and consists of a Portsmouth round of five dozen arrows shot at 20 yards on a 60 cm face. Again the league consists of divisions of six teams of five juniors and each month the juniors shoot against one of the other five teams in their division. The best five junior scores on the day make up the team score.
